Saranac Lake ready for role as first American site to host World Snow Shoe Championships

International field of competitors to descend on Coolest Town in the Adirondacks

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – The World Snow Shoe Championships will finally hit the United States mainland next month when Saranac Lake hosts the event that has been held since 2006.

To date, the World Snow Shoe Federation, the sport’s international governing body, has awarded this competition to Austria, British Columbia, Japan, Sweden, Italy, and Quebec. But never in the U.S. until next month, when athletes will descend upon this welcoming village in the Adirondacks from February 24-25.

“In recent years, Saranac Lake has proven that it’s a village on the move,” said Mayor Clyde Rabideau. “We’ve made our mark with the winter carnival and the Can Am Rugby Tournament. We’ve also created the 6er hiking brand, and in the future, we hope to see two new upscale lodging properties open their doors. Now we can add the World Snow Shoe Championships to our lineup.”

Currently, some 150 snow shoe racers have registered from the U.S. and abroad, including 15 from India. Participants can register at http://www.saranaclake.com/world-snowshoe-championships

Saranac Lake was awarded the event, in part, due to its ability to attract community support, including sponsorship from Adirondack Health, serving the Tri-Lakes area and based in Saranac Lake.

“It goes without saying that unless you have a great community partner, you cannot have a great community event,” said Mayor Rabideau. “Adirondack Health has really stepped forward to assist us in making sure this is a world class experience for everyone involved. Some participants will race all-out for a world title, while others just want to participate in our various and fun five kilometer events. Either way, Adirondack Health will play a significant role in the impression they’ll take home with them.”

For the provider of health care and other services, the partnership made perfect sense.

“As champions of a healthy and active community, Adirondack Health is always looking for new ways to encourage safe outdoor recreation,” said Adirondack Health President and CEO Sylvia Getman.  “We are incredibly excited to be a part of the 2017 World Snowshoe Championships and simply cannot wait to welcome athletes, whether from across the world or across town, to participate in the Adirondack Health ‘Shoe-Be-Doo’ 5K.”

Festivities get underway Friday, February 24, with racer registration from 10 AM to 4 PM. An Athletes’ Parade begins at 4 PM at Bitters and Bones on Broadway. The parade will proceed up Broadway to Main Street and into the Harrietstown Town Hall for an Opening Ceremony at 5 PM. The evening will conclude at 6:30 with an event under the lights at Dewey Mountain.

Race day is Saturday, February 25, but prior to that, organizers will offer pre-event activities in Riverside Park with a woodsmen’s demonstration by Paul Smiths College and an exhibition in the town hall featuring snow shoe vendors.

This will lead to the start of the 10-kilometer world championship race at 11 AM. The five-kilometer world championship race and the five-kilometer Adirondack Health Shoe-Be-Doo walk/run both begin at 1 PM. All three events get underway at the town hall, with the finish line at Riverside Park.

The Shoe-Be-Doo is open to everyone. All Tri-Lakes area students to grade 12 are invited to participate free of charge. This fun, social stroll over hill and dale, will offer free food and drink stations. Participants must bring their own snow shoes.

After the winners have been determined, the festivities continue at 2:30 with the Winter Heat Salsa Fiesta and live music in the town hall, followed by the participants banquet and award ceremony in the North Country Community College gymnasium at 5:00.

The 2017 World Snow Shoe Championships conclude with a fireworks display Saturday night at 9:00.

“Our goal is to make all the participants remember Saranac Lake, and consider us for a future visit or event,” continued Rabideau. “If some of these athletes and families come back, we will have done our jobs.”

Fantastico!

2016 World Snowshoe Championships in Vezza d'Oglio, Italy

A great weekend at the "Caspolada al Chiaro di Luna" with a fantastic atmosphere.

For the past 16 years, Pro Loco has organized the Caspolada al Chiaro di Luna, a snowshoe event with over 4000 starters. In 2016 the World Snowshoe Championships was added the program.

Friday, February 5th started with a clinic for WSSF race officials, held by Mark Elmore, WSSF's past President.
In the afternoon the members of the WSSF met for the annual WSSF Congress Meeting to talk about future initiatives.
The Friday evening started with the parade of the nations, followed by some welcome words and a spectacular water & fire show in the center of Vezzia di'Oglio.
International flags and people from all over the world could be found at restaurants, shops and on the streets throughout the weekend.

Thirteen nations took part at the World Championships race on Saturday afternoon.
The local organizers did a great job. With less snow than predicted and a lot of work to bring in truckloads of snow, the 9.5 km course was in excellent condition.
It was a mass start at 4pm, when about 100 runners started this fast flat course in warm temperatures.

Stephane Ricard of France, the 2014 World Champion, was the overall winner in 32:49 mins and the 2016 World Snowshoe Champion. The fastest lady was once again Isabella Morlini, who was awarded the World Snowshoe Championships title in the past. Here race time was 39:07 mins. Congratulations to both Isabella and Stephan!

After the race there was a brief awards ceremony for the overall three male and female athletes, just before the start of the Caspolada al Chiaro di Luna with more than 3,000 participants. The walk was a fun event which comprised of walkers and runners, with plenty of snacks, drinks and entertainment along the route.
The day finished with the main awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements and a fantastic weekend in Vezza di' Oglio.
